Dutch Grand Prix: George Russell Sets Pace in FP2 as Hulkenberg Crashes

Practice Running at Zandvoort

Mercedes driver George Russell topped the time sheets in Friday's second practice session for this weekend's 2024 FIA Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, setting a track record in the process.

Russell's best lap of 1:10.559 was 0.055 seconds faster than the previous quickest time set by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz in FP1.

The session was red-flagged with 20 minutes remaining after Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg lost control of his car at Turn 1 and crashed into the barriers.

Russell Dominates

Russell's dominant performance in FP2 is a continuation of his strong form in recent races, with the Briton having won the previous two grands prix in Belgium and the Netherlands.

He will be confident of challenging for victory again at Zandvoort, a track where he has always performed well in the past, having won in 2021 and finishing second in 2022.

Hulkenberg's Mishap

Hulkenberg's crash was a disappointing end to what had been a solid session for the German driver.

He was running in 10th place at the time of the incident, but his crash will likely result in a grid penalty for Sunday's race.

Sainz Close Behind

Sainz was second fastest in FP2, just 0.055 seconds behind Russell.

The Spaniard is another driver who has performed well at Zandvoort in the past, having finished third in 2021 and second in 2022.

Hamilton Struggles

Russell's Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton was only ninth fastest in FP2, over half a second down on his team-mate.

Hamilton has struggled for pace in recent races, and he will need to find some improvement if he is to challenge for victory on Sunday.

Conclusion

George Russell will be the man to beat in Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix after setting the pace in FP2.

The Mercedes driver is in excellent form, and he will be confident of adding to his tally of wins this season at Zandvoort.
