Early Life and Education

Edith Dumont was born on November 29, 1954, in Hearst, Ontario. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Laurentian University and a Master of Arts degree in Canadian History from the University of Ottawa.

Political Career

Dumont entered politics in 2003 when she was elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Nipissing. She held that position until 2018, serving in various cabinet positions, including Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

In 2018, Dumont was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the first Franco-Ontarian to hold the position.

Accomplishments

  • As Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Dumont led the development of Ontario's Cultural Strategy and the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games.
  • As the Lieutenant Governor, she has been a strong advocate for Franco-Ontarian and Indigenous communities, as well as environmental protection.

Personal Life

Dumont is married to Jacques Carrière, a retired teacher. They have two children and four grandchildren.
