The first season of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series, premiered on Sky Atlantic on August 21, 2022. The season tells the story of the Targaryen civil war, which took place about 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The season stars Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, and Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen.

In the first episode, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) is named heir to the Iron Throne by her father, King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). However, many in the realm are resistant to the idea of a woman on the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra faces challenges from her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen, and her stepmother, Queen Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey). The episode also introduces Ser Criston Cole, a skilled knight who becomes Rhaenyra's sworn protector.
